The memoir details Paul Proust de la Gironière's experiences in the Philippines. Travelling from his hometown in Nantes, France, Gironière settled in present-day Rizal province, where he established the Jala Jala hacienda. Some of his activities in the country include hog-raising and in planting coffee, indigo, and sugarcane, with his planting of 6,000 coffee plants being granted a prize of 1,000 pesos by the Real Sociedad Economica de Amigos del Pais de Pilipinas.
